Originally established in 1810, it went through a number of names: Craighouse, Small Isles, Caol nan Eilean, Jura, and owners without garnering any great fame until 1901 when it was among many to close in whisky’s first great sales slump. It is also reported that in 1901, the family fell into a conflict with the then Laird of Jura, resulting in the dismantling of the distillery. Jura distillery was reborn in 1963 when the spirit sprang from the Jura stills for the first time since the turn of the 20th century.
It might be reasonably assumed that Jura would make a peaty whisky. After all, the island is smothered in the stuff. But because it was built with the backing from a major blender, Mackinlay’s, and at that time light whisky was what was needed, Jura therefore, conformed to the requirements of the market.
